Police and members of the communities from Traditional Authority Kasisi in Chikwawa district have launched an intensive search to find the bodies of two girls who drowned in Shire River following the capsizing of the canoe they were travelling in on Monday this week.
According to Chikwawa Police publicist, Sergeant Sunday Ngulube, the two girls failed to swim and later drowned after the canoe capsized on their way to the other side of the river.
Six boys who were also in the same canoe managed to swim back to shore.
The missing girls have been identified as Margaret Chakha and Thokozani Tsoka, both 12 year olds who hail from Chakanila village under TA Kasisi in the district.
“The cause of the accident is yet to be established but efforts are being made to find the missing bodies,” said Ngulube.
