A tragic car accident has claimed the lives of three TNM Super League players from Malawi Defence Force side Mafco.
Sadani Mangwere, Gift Mphonde and Chifuniro Phiri died after the truck they were travelling in was involved in an accident in Nkhotakota.
“We regret to announce the untimely death of three Mafco players in tragic accident in the early hours of today (Friday).
“The three players were traveling in a truck on their way to Salima from Dwangwa, Nkhotakota,” Sulom general secretary announced.
Following the deaths, Sulom has since rescheduled the army side’s games to a later date to be announced.
“In view of the foregoing the games Mafco v Kamuzu Barracks and Mafco v Epac have since been rescheduled to a future date to be communicated. May the souls of the players rest in peace,” he said.
Meanwhile, Malawi Defence Force has announced the details for the burial of the fallen soldiers.
Chifuniro Phiri will be buried tomorrow at his home village in Chilowa, TA Kaomba.
Sadani Mangwere will be buried tomorrow at his home village James TA Chikowi in Zomba district.
Gift Mphonde will also be burid tomorrow at his village at Giya TA Chikowi in Zomba.
Mafco chairman Captain Chitumbo Chiramba described the death of the players as tragedy to the MDF side.
Two weeks ago a Bvumbwe United player also died in an accident in Thyolo forcing Fam to reschedule the team’s Carlsberg Cup game between them and Evirom.
Before him the country also lost another football icon Chikondi Banda.
