Kallstrom comes with immense experience. The Sweden international was at Lyon for six years and has 108 caps for his country. The move would cost the club a small fee.

Aaron Ramsey will miss up to six weeks according to Wenger, which has intensified their search for new bodies.

‘We are open minded and active, we look at opportunities. We still try to bring at least one player as we were hit by the suspension to Flamini and the injury to Ramsey. A midfielder is one of the solutions,’ Wenger said on Friday.

‘I would scrap the winter transfer window. It is 80-20 we will do something else today. The window is a distraction from the competition. I can understand the interest but it’s not football.’

Ramsey, 23, has been one of the stand-out performers this season and played a key part in helping the side into a position to challenge for their first league crown since 2004.
