‘Misses out on $1.2 million Picasso painting’ as it goes to hotelier at VIP Art Basel show
P. Diddy had a disappointing time at a VIP art preview this week.
At the Miami based Art Basel event, the 45-year-old music mogul was reportedly seen eyeing up a fresco piece, titled Venus at the booth of Zurich-based Galerie Gmurzynska.
Unfortunately for Diddy, when he returned with Swizz Beats and Tommy Hilfiger for another look, the painting had already gone to hotelier Vikram Chatwal for $1.2 million, according to ArtNetNews.
No luck: P. Diddy missed out on some Picasso artwork this week at the Art Basel VIP preview in Miami
The star, who is likely used to getting what he wants, was seen mingling with other art lovers at the Miami Beach Convention Center on Wednesday including Baz Luhrmann – the director behind the event.
As a consolation, Diddy spent $95,000 on a 2011 Tracey Emin neon from the Lehmann Maupin Gallery.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the piece by the British artist spells out, in bright lettering, ‘I Listen to the Ocean and All I Hear is You.’

Chatwal confirmed he had purchased the Picasso, plus another piece by Jean-Michel Basquiat, at Gagosian Gallery’s booth for an undisclosed sum.
Bloomberg reported Larry Gagosian said he would not discuss the artwork they had sold at his Gagosian Gallery booth. “We don’t brag, we don’t talk,” he said. “We just want the quiet thud of a check on our desk.”
The popular art event, which attracts a large number of celebrities, was created in 1970 by three gallerists, and displays numerous works of art available for viewing in Hong Kong, Miami, and Basel every year.

Blouin Artinfo reported that the 40-year-old actor took home a 1973 work by Frank Stella for ‘slightly under’ the million mark.
Other big names in attendance according to The Hollywood Reporter included Michael Govan, director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the museum’s auctioneer and trustee – and Will Ferrell’s wife – Viveca Paulin-Ferrell, and Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
