Valerie Trierweiler has been in a Paris hospital since reports of an affair between the president and an actress first surfaced
French President Francois Hollande has visited the first lady in hospital for the first time since she was admitted a week ago after a gossip magazine reported he was having an affair with an actress.
Valerie Trierweiler is said to have experienced a “crisis of nerves” following the claims Mr Hollande was involved in a relationship with actress Julie Gayet.
The 41-year-old established actress in France, who is yet to speak publicly about the matter, is seeking €50,000 (£41,650) in damages and €4,000 (£3,330) in legal costs from the French edition of Closer.
Ms Gayet, a mother-of-two, who also appeared in a 2012 election film for Mr Hollande, claims the magazine breached the country’s privacy rules.
Closer published photos that it claimed showed Mr Hollande, wearing a motorcycle helmet with darkened visor, sneaking into an apartment near the presidential palace to meet the actress.
Ms Trierweiler, a 48-year-old journalist who has lived with Mr Hollande since 2007, has been in Paris’ Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital since the allegations surfaced and is said to be in a state of shock.
On Tuesday, he admitted he was going through “a painful time” in his personal life at a news conference.
Speaking for the first time since the publication of the tabloid photographs, he said he was “totally indignant” about the magazine report, which he said threatened France’s principle of “respect for private life and people’s dignity”.
He declined an opportunity to confirm whether his partner Valerie Trierweiler was still the first lady of France.
She is reportedly prepared to forgive him.
