‘I gotta be the President’

Will Smith says Donald Trump’s ‘crazy’ views on Muslims may ‘force’ him to enter politics

He’s a two-time Oscar nominee and a multiple Grammy winner.

But Will Smith has insisted he feels there is still so much more for him to give, and the political arena is next on his list.

The 47-year-old has told CBS NEWS that Donald Trump’s ‘crazy’ comments suggesting the U.S. should ban all Muslims from entering the country, may ‘force’ him to run for office.

Speaking to Tracy Smith for an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, the actor and musician explained:

‘There’s a thing that I’m supposed to be doing, there’s a person I want to be that I always saw a reflection in my grandmother’s eyes of what it is, but I can’t reach that thing. There’s so much more that I feel I have to offer that I can’t access in myself.’

When asked where he thinks his ambition might take him next, Will replied: ‘If people keep saying all the crazy kinds of stuff they’ve been saying on the news lately about walls and Muslims, they’re going to force me into the political arena.’

And the multi-talented star is aiming high, quipping: ‘I mean, I gotta be the president. Come on! What else would I run for?’

Will went on to explain that he’s always dreamed big in his career but he still thinks he could go further, revealing: ‘I realised that the dream was too small. You know, I realised that there was no way that I was put here just to be a movie star.’

The proud father is passing on his ambitious outlook to his children, advising them to ‘be as unrealistic as possible, and then figure out how to make it real. The best things that have ever happened, ever, were unrealistic before they happened. So for me, I think being the biggest movie star in the world as a goal actually was too small!’

U.S presidential candidate Trump sparked outrage across the world last week by demanding a ‘total and complete shutdown’ on Muslim immigration to America, in the wake of the mass shooting in San Bernandino which saw two ISIS sympathisers kill 14 people.

In a statement released to the media, Mr Trump said he was ‘calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on’.

He added: ‘Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life.

‘I think that we should definitely disallow any Muslims from coming in. Any of them. The reason is simple: we can’t identify what their attitude is.’

Will isn’t the first public figure to denounce Trump’s view. Muhammad Ali, who Smith played in his Oscar-nominated film Ali, said in a statement to NBC News last week: ‘I am a Muslim and there is nothing Islamic about killing innocent people in Paris, San Bernardino, or anywhere else in the world. True Muslims know that the ruthless violence of so called Islamic Jihadists goes against the very tenets of our religion.’

‘Speaking as someone who has never been accused of political correctness, I believe that our political leaders should use their position to bring understanding about the religion of Islam and clarify that these misguided murderers have perverted people’s views on what Islam really is.’

Though the iconic sportsman never mentions Trump by name, the headline of his statement is titled, ‘Presidential Candidates Proposing to Ban Muslim Immigration to the United States.’
