Malawi’s Budget Director escapes assassination attempt

Malawi’s Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo is battling for his life in South Africa after an attempt on his life.
Mphwiyo was shot three times by unknown assailants at the entrance of his residence in Area 43 in Lilongwe on Friday evening.
He was airlifted to South Africa to get more medical attention and his wife said he was in a critical but stable condition.
“He cannot speak to you at the moment as he is in hospital bed, but he is now stable,” she said.
Before his appointment, Mphwiyo worked in the Treasury for almost a decade and held a number of key positions within the ministry including assistant budget director.
He then rose to the position of deputy budget director, acting director of economic affairs, and acting director of financial sector development.
Before joining the Treasury, he worked at the Department of Energy Affairs as Economist and Senior Economist and then Ministry of Lands as Principal Economist.
Meanwhile, President Joyce Banda said the Budget Director was a victim of a corrupt syndicate that he had uncovered.
Speaking in Chichewa at a 9th Ijtima meeting, which is a gathering of Muslim women, at Lunzu, Blantyre on Saturday Banda said Mphwiyo’s assassins would be brought to book.
“Whoever stole money meant for purchasing of medicine and construction of school blocks will be caught despite the incident,” said Banda.
