The fight between boxing superstars Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr has been pencilled in for September 2014.
According to the Youtube Channel 78Sports TV via an article in the Latin Post, the fight is a done deal and if true will end the years of debate between boxing fans about which fighter is better.
The source has leaked information before about Mayweather’s showdowns with Robert Guerrero and Saul Canelo Alvarez months before those fights were officially announced.
However, Mike Koncz, Manny Pacquiao’s adviser, has denied rumours of a fight between both fighters. to Yahoo Sports.
Mayweather, 36, has started 2014 in a prominent position with two notable victories over Robert Guerrero and Saul Canelo Alvarez and strong indications that he will fight Amir Khan in May this year.
Meanwhile Pacquiao, 35, ended 2013 with a victory over Brandon Rios in Macau, China that ignited fresh demands for him to face Mayweather.
Numerous attempts to get the boxers together in the ring and endless calls from fans for the bout to materialise fell through as boxings byzantine politics got in the way of what should have been simple negotiations.
Politics and Money
Attempts to get the two into the ring together in earnest since 2010 have been foiled by three factors including money, drugs testing and Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum.
Mayweather has repeatedly said he would not do business with Pacquiao while he is promoted by Arum in his Top Rank Promotions label.
Now it seems that Pacquiao could leave Arum in order to secure the fight with Mayweather who demanded that Pacquiao be a free agent in order to negotiate the contest.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Stephen Espinoza, Showtime Executive Vice President, has insisted Mayweather “will fight Manny Pacquiao anywhere, any time” and hinted that if the Filipino parted with Bob Arum for one contest, the contest would go ahead.
Mayweather used to be promoted by Arum but fell out with him and went independent as he felt that he could earn more money on his own.
Similarly, money has been an issue in the past as neither camp seemed to be able to come to a conclusion about how the earnings of the multi-million dollar encounter could be split fairly between both fighters.
Finally, Mayweather and his camp demanded that Pacquiao take a drugs test before any fight and thereby insinuated Pacquiao had been taking steroids as he jumped through weight classes.
Pacquiao and his camp were upset by the accusations and this was stumbling block that now appears to have been removed.
The Filipino has said he will now take a drugs tests and did so before his fight against Rios.
Fight of the Century?
Mayweather and Pacquiao are both seen as the greatest fighters of their generation with each fighter gaining distinction for the number of belts they won in various weight classes.
Pacquiao has won world titles in eight different weight divisions while Mayweather is undefeated in 45 fights and has gained titles in five different weight classes.
What makes the bout if it comes off more even compelling than their respective records are their personalities and unique fighting styles.
Mayweather is a masterful counter-puncher that hardly ever wastes a punch, establishes a slight lead over his opponent early on and never puts himself in danger by taking stupid risks.
He is also brash and known for his controversial persona that thrives on being disliked by critics in the media and among boxing fans.
Pacquiao is a mesmerising and aggressive puncher who is quick, accurate and has a killer instinct that allows him to finish off opponents as soon as he sees blood.
His personality is the opposite of Mayweather as he is soft spoken, humble and could even be described as reserved at times.
Fans will only hope that Mayweather and Pacquiao finally meet in September and bring the claims and counter-claims about who is the best fighter of their generation to an end.
