The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has expressed concern over continued reports of prophecies circulating in the social media tipping some political leaders to win the country’s presidency next year.
Mec has since indicated that it will convene a meeting with religious leaders on their role ahead of the 2014 tripartite elections.
Delegates to the national elections consultative meeting last Friday also described the prophecies as ill timed and that they may confuse and jeopardize the voter registration exercise.
They therefore urged electoral authorities to intervene in the matter in order to avoid uncertainties and ensure smooth progress of the exercise.
In response, Mec Commissioner Emmanuel Chimkwita Phiri assured the delegates that the commission would engage the religious groups, saying such pronouncements could unsettle and demoralize electorates.
