Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming the Portuguese star prevented him from winning the Champions League during his time at Real Madrid.
Having won the European trophy with both Porto and Inter Milan, the current Chelsea boss joined Los Blancos in 2010 aiming to conquer his third successive Champions League.
However, Real Madrid only reached the semi-finals during his three season tenure at the Santiado Bernabeu.
Mourinho blames Ronaldo for their failure in the 2011 – 2012 campaign when the Manchester United legend missed a crucial penalty during the shootout in the semi-final against Bayern Munich – with Kaka and Sergio Ramos also failing both shoots.
“I’ve been in several semi-finals too and some defeats were especially hard to take, such as the goal that did not exist against Liverpool (during his first Chelsea spell) in 2005 or on penalties in 2012 when our first-choice penalty taker (Ronaldo) went up first and failed.”
“Losing a semi-final on penalties when your best player, your best penalty taker, the player in whom you trust to shoot the first penalty, goes to the box and misses it, is a frustration that remains,” Mourinho said during an interview with TVI24.
The Chelsea boss reportedly ended his spell in La Liga on a sour note with Ronaldo, and when recently asked whether the Blues may sign him in the future, Moruinho said: “Forget it”.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese boss ruled out recent reports that said he could take over as Portugal manager after Paulo Bento resigned.
“They have not asked me if I want the job, but I would not accept. I’m surprised with the situation though. It is not unheard of for a coach to be fired or to depart after one or two games, sometimes even in pre-season if it does not feel right. If there’s not a connection there or if chances of success are minimal,” He said.
“But that’s not the case here. If at the end of the World Cup, Bento had decided to leave or the Portuguese football association had chosen to get someone new, that would be normal. But at this point it is strange.”
