Chelsea star Petr Cech is furious with Jose Mourinho for refusing to hold a private chat over his decision to make Thibaut Courtois his number one goalkeeper. The Czech Republic international subsequently wants to quit Stamford Bridge this week.
This latest development in the fascinating Cech-Courtois battle comes courtesy of the Daily Mail, who report that several unnamed Spanish clubs have joined French duo Paris Saint-Germain and AS Monaco in the race to sign the 32-year-old.
The same report adds that Cech may push for a permanent move, even though Chelsea would prefer to loan him out, with a break clause in January.
Cech told of decison last Monday
Cech was informed by Mourinho that he was no longer Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper last Monday, on the day of the Blues’ 2014/15 Premier League opener against Burnley at Turf Moor.
Courtois impressed on his competitive debut, and produced another fine performance during Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Leicester City at Stamford Bridge, pulling off several crucial saves to justify Mourinho’s decision.
Mourinho gives his reasons
After that match, Mourinho elaborated on the reasons behind his decision to make Courtois his number one. He stated that the club must always come first, and the fact Courtois is 10 years younger than Cech meant there was always ever going to be one winner.
Courtois, who spent three seasons on loan with Atletico before returning to Stamford Bridge this summer, has still not signed a new contract with Chelsea, despite the fact his current deal expires in the summer of 2016.
Chelsea are fearful that Courtois will refuse to put pen to paper on a contract extension – and, as a result, are keen to keep Cech as sweet as possible in the event that the Belgium international walks away from Stamford Bridge as a free agent in two years’ time.
