Francois Hollande visited his political heartland today while continuing to refuse to answer questions about his deceitful juggling of the two women in his life.
The 59-year-old President of France visited Tulle, his home constituency, where he wooed both his de facto first lady Valerie Trierweiler, 48, and his girlfriend Julie Gayet, 41.
It came as Ms Trierweiler finally left the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital in Paris after eight nights.
A presidential convoy collected her soon after 3.30pm, and she was whisked in the direction of La Lanterne, the presidential retreat at Versailles, west of Paris.
Ms Trierweiler has indicated that she wants to ‘convalesce’ at the mansion, despite having a flat of her own in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.
Aides have indicated that she wants to remain first lady, and is prepared to ‘forgive’ Mr Hollande’s deceit.
He will make up his mind about whether Ms Trierweiler or Ms Gayet continues as first lady by February 11th, the day the president is due in Washington DC, for a visit to President Obama.
Despite the growing scandal, a new poll reveals that the vast majority of French people believe he was ‘right’ to keep his private life a secret.
In all, 75 per cent approve of Mr Hollande’s decision not to answer questions about who his girlfriend was at a press conference last Tuesday.
This figure rises to an astonishing 94 per cent when Socialist supporters of the embattled head of state were asked about his behaviour.
The new BVA poll for the i-tele TV channel will come as a great relief to Mr Hollande, as he continues to use privacy laws and the traditional secrecy surrounding the private lives of French politicians to avoid awkward questions.

They continued today in Tulle, central France, where Mr Hollande served as mayor for seven years.
It was also in the picturesque town that, in May 2012, Mr Hollande and Ms Trierweiler embraced after he was elected president of France.
But, just over a year later, on July 20th 2013, Mr Hollande went on a very public tour of the town’s market with Ms Gayet, it has now emerged.
The pair were pictured shoulder to shoulder, laughing and joking constantly, while Ms Gayet wore sunglasses while acting just like a presidential consort.
Pictures were taken by numerous locals, but Elysee Palace aides are said to have gone to great lengths to keep them out of the public eye.

This was while Ms Trierweiler was holidaying alone in Greece, and desperately hoping that Mr Hollande would join her.
In fact his affair with Ms Gayet has been going on for longer than his presidency, with Ms Hollande using public funds to keep his cheating a secret.
A range of well sourced French media have provided compelling evidence that he used VIP bodyguards and at least two Paris flats and a villa on the French Riviera to carry on the affair with Ms Gayet, a film and TV actress.
Despite being a household name and instantly recognisable, she has been in hiding since news of the scandal broke in Closer magazine on January 10th.
Ms Trierweiler today remained in hospital, however, after taking ‘one pill too many’ when she heard about Mr Hollande’s cheating last Friday week.
Photographs of the politician wearing a crash helmet as he visited a flat just around the corner from the Elysee palace for regular trysts with Ms Gayet first appeared in French Closer magazine.

Despite efforts by journalist to get Mr Hollande to answer questions in Tulle today, he once again remained silent about the scandal, instead offering ‘New Year wishes’ to the people of the Corrhze department, and talking about his rural policy.
Bernard Combes, the Socialist mayor of Tulle, said the president had ‘no interest’ in discussing the presiident’s private life and that he had ‘every right to his privacy’.
Today’s BVA poll was conducted by internet and telephone using a quota method, with a sample of 990 people representing France’s adult population.
