As People’s Choice kicks off awards season
Sandra Bullock kicked off awards season 2014 as she no doubt means to go on at the 40th Annual People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night.
Sandra, 49, was named Favorite Movie Actress for Gravity, and won a further two awards at the star-studded bash.
Joining her for a hat-trick celebration was pop star Justin Timberlake, who also picked up three awards, including Favorite Album for The 20/20 Experience.
The ladies started things off with a pre-recorded skit from their hit show, and the first joke of the night came with a quip about Kat’s ample cleavage, which she referred to as her ‘Golden Globes’.
Beverly Hills 90210 star Ian Ziering also made fun of himself and his role in the much-maligned Sharknado, begging for a nomination
Triple threat: Sandra was awarded yet more glass gong as she posed backstage at the event in Los Angeles
Getting together: Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, and Heidi Klum sit together at the award ceremony
The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco then cropped up to invite the pair to get on with their hosting duties.
However, the scene was stolen by a cameo from Christina Aguilera – who appeared dressed as a busty waitress, willing to fill in for the girls as they head off to the awards bash.
Pointing to her ample cleavage, Christina joked: ‘Don’t worry ladies, I get a lot of tips’.
Once they made it on stage, both Kat and Beth were in a sarcastic mood as they pointed out dryly that Sharknado was indeed one of the nominations of the night.
Heidi Klum showed she was up for a laugh as she tried to order a burger and fries from Beth – who plays a waitress on the show 2 Broke Girls.
Will and Grace star Sean Hayes was the first to present, the award for Favorite Movie Actress.
Beating out nominees such as Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Melissa McCarthy and Scarlett Johansson was Gravity star Sandra Bullock.
Hilariously, Sean announced the result referring to Sandra as his ‘wife’.
Taking to the stage, Sandra gushed: ‘I’d like to thank my husband Sean, for being there night and day, night and day.
On-screen favorites: Drew Barrymore gave out the award for Favorite Comedic Actor to her Wedding Singer co-star Adam Sandler
Glitter girl : Nina Dobrev looked stunning in a fitted black dress embellished with an off-centre sequin design
‘It looks like I spent Friday nights staying home and voting for myself.’
Thanking her The Heat co-star she thanks Melissa McCarthy, saying: ‘An actor can’t do what they do without people working, for them, beside them with them.’
Jessica Alba then gave out the gong for Favorite Album, which went to Justin Timberlake – who jokingly wrestled with Ellen DeGeneres before making it to the stage.
‘I would like to thank Ellen for all the personal inspiration,’ Justin said – starting a theme of light-hearted acceptance speech.
Although Justin was once again without his wife Jessica Biel, he did remember to thank her in his speech.
Somewhat patronizingly, Justin thanked Jessica for teaching him to ‘[put] the dishes in the dishwasher… fellas, you’re welcome,’
Interestingly, Ellen then followed Justin in accepting an award – her 14th People’s Choice Award – for Best Talk Show Host.
‘I treasure this because it is from the people,’ Ellen said.
Certainly hoping to follow in the footsteps of Ellen, was actress Queen Latifah, was awarded the glass gong for Favorite New Talk-Show Host.
Drew Barrymore then took to the stage to present the award for favorite comedic movie actor.
However, Drew made the audience gasp as she revealed: ‘Ellen DeGeneres just told me I was fat! But I’m not! It was really funny’.
She handed the gong to her Wedding Singer co-star Adam Sandler, making it his fourth consecutive win.
Favorite network TV drama went to The Good Wife, and Julia Margulies represented that cast, also accepting on behalf of her co-star Josh Charles, who was named favorite dramatic TV actor.
Sandra Bullock then took to the stage once again to pick up her second award of the evening – which this time she shared with Melissa McCarthy – as their film The Heat was named Favorite Comedic Movie.
Tropy Wife star Malin Akerman stunned in a tight graphic print dress that showed off her cleavage.
Malin presented the award with Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore, and the pair enjoyed some on stage flirting, appropriate for their award category.
They presented Favorite On-Screen Chemistry which went to Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev for their work in The Vampire Diaries.
The pair joked about the fact they had dated briefly off-screen as well, with Nina saying: ‘It’s a good thing it’s not awkward’.
The next award was a big win for Britney Spears – as it was her first People’s Choice Awards – but the typically shy star kept her awards speech short and simple.
Britney beat out competition from Katy Perry, and her ex Justin Timberlake.
Kaley Cuoco, 28, – who has previously hosted the bash – then won for Favorite Comedic TV Actress for The Big Bang Theory.
‘This is such an honour you guys,’ Kaley said tearing up.
She then thanked her new husband Ryan Sweeting, saying: ‘This is the second best thing that’s happened to me all year, the first was marrying you baby!’
Glee star Chris Colfor, 23, followed Kaley as he was named the Favorite Comedic TV Actor.
Favorite Action Movie was next, and went to Robert Downey Jr., 48, who beat out the likes of Brad Pitt and Channing Tatum.
‘I’m thrilled. Very stiff competition this year,’ he said before acting putting on his best ‘Iron Man’ voice, thanking ‘the people’.
TLC’s Rozonda Thomas’ new beau Wayne Brady then took to the stage to introduce LL Cool J.
The rapper then presented the Favorite Humanitarian to Jennifer Hudson, for her work with the Julian D. King Gift Foundation – dedicated to her late nephew.
‘It’s healing with every smile,’ Jennifer said in a pre-recorded video.
Wiping away tears from the audience, the Dreamgirls star composed herself as she walked up to collect the award
‘I have to say the first thing I said when I won my Oscar, look what God can do!’ she said.
The Foundation was formed in honor of Jennifer’s slain nephew Julian King, and it helps provide ‘stability and positive experiences for children of all backgrounds’.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, 36, got her very first People’s Choice for Favorite Actress in a New TV Series for The Crazy Ones.
‘You’re the reason we do what we do, and get to do what we do,’ she said.

However, Sarah then made a special mention of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, saying, ‘I never got the chance to say thank you for Buffy,’ which received a huge cheer.
Friends star Matt LeBlanc was next up, presenting the award for Favorite Network TV Comedy.
The gong went to The Big Bang Theory, making it their third award in that category.
