The Malawi National Under 20 team has been invited to participate in the annual Cosafa Youth Championship.
The tournament will be hosted by Lesotho and will take place between December 3-14.
The format commences with group stages, with teams then progressing to the semi-finals and final.
Only players born on or after January 1, 1994 are eligible to participate.
Fam general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda confirmed about the invitation and said logistics are being put in place to ensure the team’s participation at the tournament.
“This is a very important tournament for the development of future players. Ever since we started taking part in the competitions we have managed to produce a lot of players and we cannot afford to miss this tournament,” Nyirenda.
However, Malawi’s participation is in limbo because Fam exhausted its annual funding from government.
Fam was allocated K60 million this year but the money was used for Flames World Cup qualifiers against Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria and the Senior Cosafa tournament in Zambia.
General secretary Nyirenda said the issue would be discussed at a Fam executive committee meeting to be held on October 12.
So far Lesotho, Angola, Botswana, Madagascar, Mozambique, Seychelles, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe have confirmed their participation while Fam is waiting from Fam executive committee meeting to decide.
Malawi has never won the tournament since its inception in 1997 but have been in the finals once in 2003 but lost to a Collins Mbesuma inspired Zambia 4-0.
Last time the tournament was held was in 2011 in Botswana and Malawi finished fourth after losing 1-0 to hosts in the match for third place.
