Zambia to host Africa Youth Championship

Following extensive lobbying and hard work behind the scenes, Africa’s soccer governing body has given Faz the right to organize and host the 2017 Africa Youth Championship – the first ever Caf continental championship to be hosted by Zambia.
The awarding of the right to host the CAN-U20 is another milestone for administration led by Kalusha Bwalya which has recorded many unprecedented developments for Zambian football, among them, a Nations Cup victory, Cosafa and Nelson Mandela success, highly commercialization of the league as well as many administrative, technical and development programmes.
The hosting rights for the 2017 Caf under-20 championship was confirmed at the Caf Executive Committee meeting held in Cairo on Saturday 21st September 2013.
In confirming the decision of Caf, Faz president Kalusha, a Caf Executive Committee member (the first Zambian to be elected to the continental football governing body) expressed delight as he broke the news soon after the end of the meeting in Cairo.
Said Kalusha; “Dear colleagues, I would like to inform you that Zambia has been awarded the right to host the U- 20 African Championship in 2017. This was confirmed in the afternoon at our Executive Meeting here in Cairo! I am really delighted for our football.”
Added the Great Kalu, “Let me also thank the Government through the Minister of Sport Hon Chishimba Kambwili for backing the Football Association of Zambia all the way in this bid. It will be a first for Zambia to be hosting a competition and I’m sure our people will be delighted in this news. The time to prepare starts now.”
Zambia’s only attempt to host a Caf came in 1988 but the country floundered in its attempt to host the Africa Cup finals of 1988 as the country failed to put up infrastructure for the hosting of the event. Caf took away the championship and awarded them to Morocco.
The 2017 Youth finals should be a success as the country has modern football infrastructure and a visionary and highly professional leadership and administration. (Source: Supersport).
